Class Descriptions

Show classes for:
Mixed-ages (0-5 yrs)

This is the essential Music Together® class, one that a child can attend from birth through age four - and through all nine song collections. Child development researchers recommend mixed-age groupings because they foster natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, and exploring musical instruments. The class provides a variety of adult-child activities that are fun and offer new ways to play musically at home. Parents, grandparents, or nanny, individually or together, may accompany the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience.

Musical Parenting Group (infants 0 - 8 mos)

Every child’s music development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies. Infants may attend a mixed-age class, whether registered on their own or attending free with an older sibling. They may also be registered for the special “Babies Class” offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together. The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents and caregivers who want to learn as much as possible about music development in infants. Meet other parents of newborns and learn fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby. Babies must be under seven months old on the first day of class. Most babies in this program range from 3-5 months at the start of the semester. We recommend infants older than six months register for mixed-age classes. This class cannot be repeated.

Canta y Baila Conmigo®

Canta y Baila Conmigo creates a playful, interactive atmosphere where language-learning is naturally and organically integrated into the musical experience. CyBC appeals to a wide variety of families, from native and heritage Spanish speakers to brand new Spanish-learners. It is different from other early childhood language offerings in that, rather than "teaching Spanish vocabulary through songs," CyBC teaches the "Spanish language through music."

Each semester features a collection of carefully selected folk classics, familiar children's songs, and new adaptations of traditional songs and rhymes. The repertoire authentically represents a wide variety of Spanish-speaking regions and cultures, including Andean, Mexican, Afro-Hispano, Caribbean, Castilian, Argentine, and more. Along with the take-home CD, families receive a songbook containing Spanish lyrics, sheet music, cultural notes, and an English Language Supplement for those who are learning Spanish.

Master Class for 3s/4s

Although most three and four year olds thrive in a mixed age environment, we do have another option for your family. Designed for children who've been in Music Together, this class is geared towards the older child and is structured more like a preschool classroom experience - with parent involvement. Musical activities such as rhythm improvisation, independent singing, dance improvisation, and dramatic play are integrated into the curriculum. Younger siblings are welcome to attend the 3s/4s class with their older brothers and sisters.

Rhythm Kids Level 1 (Pre-K: 4 to 5 yrs)

In Rhythm Kids classes, we drum, sing, and move to rhythms and music from around the world. The Rhythm Kids curriculum is an international, research-based music immersion program developed specifically for families with preschoolers and early elementary students aged 4 to 8-years old. Level 1 is for pre-k age children from 4 to 5 years.

Rhythm Kids students learn to compose, choreograph, and conduct as they play—and play with!—djembes, other percussion instruments, and their first instruments (their voices and bodies). When parents and caregivers choose to attend class (not required), too, they not only amplify their children’s learning but also have a great time singing, moving, and drumming themselves.

Honoring both cultural traditions from around the world and all children’s birthright to develop Basic Music Competence, Rhythm Kids classes include:

  • Immersion in the rhythmic “language” of cultures from six continents (sorry, Antarctica!);
  • Playful, developmentally-appropriate music games;
  • Opportunities to lead, balanced with opportunities to collaborate;
  • Rich, creative experimentation and expression, improvisation and innovation;
  • Deep exposure to music that is both complex and fun;
  • A carefully-constructed three-year Animal Song Curriculum (from Alligators and Tree Frogs to Elephants and Kangaroos);
  • Expert teachers, award-winning materials, and a worldwide Rhythm Kids community.

Whether as a stand-alone music class or as a companion to formal instruction, Rhythm Kids helps children develop the facility, repertoire, and creativity that will allow them to unleash their own music-making potential.

The Rhythm Kids curriculum is co-authored by the developers of Music Together® and early childhood percussion expert Tom Foote.

Rhythm Kids classes support the next level of music learning by capitalizing on how older children are wired to learn. Through unique music games, drumming patterns, and music from around the world, the big kids in this class collaborate, compose, choreograph, and conduct.

Mixed-ages (Bi-lingual Spanish)

This is the Music Together mixed-age class you know and love taught bi-lingually, in Spanish and English. You don't need to speak Spanish to be in this class--this is not a language immersion experience, it is exposure to the Spanish language through music experiences. The songs in each collection have been recorded in a mixture of English and Spanish, which you’ll receive as a CD and download. And, in addition to your weekly classes and the bilingual recording, you’ll receive the new English-language illustrated songbook, a booklet with the Spanish lyrics, and a family newsletter with more at-home music-making ideas that can hacer que cada día sea más divertido—make every day more fun! It's a great way to expose your children to a new language or to have a place where a bilingual family can feel at home.

Music Together In School (online)

This Music Together Online class is for children and their families who attend a preschool where we provide Music Together classes on a weekly basis.

Music Together Outdoors - Pod Group

Social distancing (and social distance-SING!) will be practiced throughout the class. The only thing we'll share is our love for making music together! Families should bring a big blanket for their family to sit on. Each blanket will help provide a clear visual boundary for social distancing while we sing, dance, and jam together-- but at least 10 feet apart. Each family will bring instruments from home (can be homemade or "found") and other items for being outside (water, sunscreen, bug spray, etc).

  • Masks will be required during class for adults children (over age two) when within 6 feet of others. Masks should be worn when arriving/departing class.

  • Before you leave home: Please do a quick self-assessment and stay home if you or anyone living in your home is showing any one of these symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, other respiratory symptoms or any two of these symptoms: chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat or new loss of taste or smell. Please stay home and schedule an online makeup if you or anyone you’ve been in close contact with has been exposed to COVID-19.

  • There will be no in-person make-up or drop-in classes. If your family has to miss a class, you can schedule a make-up in a Zoom class for that week. You are also invited to attend unlimited drop-in classes on Zoom.

  • Outside classes are closed to families not enrolled in the class. Make-ups, drop-ins and free trials will not be allowed in outside classes.

  • Outside classes are held on a weather-permitting basis.  If we have to cancel due to weather, we will email/text you ASAP to let you know that we'll be having class (at your scheduled time) via Zoom. If it's forecasted to be colder than 35 degrees, we will meet via Zoom. If it's raining 45 minutes before class begins, we will meet via Zoom. If not, we will risk it. (If we get caught in the rain, we'll sing, dance, and run for cover!) We will do my best to alert you via email with as much notice as possible but, if you ever have any questions as to whether we'll be meeting outside or via Zoom, please don't hesitate to text 917-994-0534 at any time.

  • Participation in Music Together Outside classes requires signing a waiver during the registration process.

  • We will switch to online classes if NY State mandates changes in current COVID-19 protocols.

  • There will be no refunds or credits due to classes moving online.

  • Maximum seven families per class. Each family unit should have max of three persons (1 adult/2 children or 2 adults/1 child). For families with three children, 1 adult max please.

  • Class is 35-40 minutes.

Requirement for Outdoor Classes: At checkout, 'Music Together Outdoors' families will be required to agree to our Terms and Conditions, including a Liability Waiver, in order to attend outdoor class.
